Job Overview
The Sustainable Livestock Development Officer will lead initiatives to improve smallholder livestock productivity, promote climate-smart practices, and enhance market access for rural communities in Bomet County. This role requires collaboration with local farmers, government agencies, and NGOs to design and implement scalable solutions for sustainable livestock development.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute livestock development programs focused on improved breeding, feed management, and disease prevention.
- Conduct field assessments to identify challenges in livestock systems and propose evidence-based interventions.
- Train farmers on sustainable practices, including rotational grazing, water conservation, and fodder production.
- Collaborate with veterinary services and extension officers to monitor animal health and productivity.
- Facilitate partnerships with private sector stakeholders to improve market linkages for livestock products.
- Collect and analyze data on program impact to inform policy recommendations and scale successful models.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in livestock development, agricultural extension, or rural livelihoods programs.
- Strong project management skills with a track record of delivering results in complex environments.
- Knowledge of climate-smart agriculture and adaptive livestock practices.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Proficiency in data collection tools (e.g., GIS, mobile surveys) and impact evaluation frameworks.
- Fluency in English and local languages (e.g., Kalenjin, Kipsigis) is an advantage.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Science, Animal Husbandry, Environmental Science, or related field. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
Experience
3-5 years of professional experience in livestock development, rural development, or agricultural extension. Experience working in arid and semi-arid regions of Kenya is highly desirable.
Salary
150,000 – 200,000 SSP per annum, commensurate with experience.
