Job Overview
The Associate Legal Adviser (ALA) – Africa Programme supports the Africa Regional Programme (ARP) in advancing human rights, access to justice, and rule of law across the region.
This role focuses on legal research, advocacy, and programme implementation, with a strong emphasis on gender equality and disability rights. The position works closely with senior leadership to deliver impactful legal interventions and advocacy strategies in Kenya and globally.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Implementation & Support
- Assist in executing the Africa Programme strategy using legal and advocacy tools
- Support planning of workshops, seminars, and legal training sessions
- Contribute to capacity building for lawyers, judges, and stakeholders
Legal Research & Analysis
- Conduct human rights legal research and analysis
- Draft and contribute to reports, briefing papers, and legal memoranda
- Monitor law reform, access to justice, and rule of law developments
Advocacy & Communications
- Support human rights advocacy campaigns across multiple platforms
- Develop social media content, newsletters, and press materials
- Manage media engagement and public communications strategies
Legal Interventions
- Assist in drafting legal briefs and case submissions
- Support litigation before national, regional courts, and UN mechanisms
Training & Capacity Building
- Help design and deliver training programmes on human rights law
- Develop materials on litigation strategies and advocacy initiatives
Networking & Representation
- Build relationships with NGOs, government institutions, donors, and legal communities
- Represent the organization in regional and international forums
Programme Management & Reporting
- Support budget management and resource allocation
- Contribute to donor reporting and fundraising proposals
- Maintain programme documentation and progress reports
Eligibility & Qualifications
Education
- Degree in Law (LLB or equivalent)
- Advanced degree in International Human Rights Law or Humanitarian Law (preferred)
Experience
- Minimum 3+ years’ experience in legal research, human rights advocacy, or related fields
- Experience working on international human rights standards implementation
- Prior experience working in Kenya (required)
Skills & Competencies
- Strong legal writing, research, and analytical skills
- Knowledge of international human rights law and jurisprudence
- Experience in advocacy, litigation support, and policy analysis
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Language & Technical Skills
- Excellent English writing and communication skills
- Additional regional language skills (advantage)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
