Job Overview

The Marine Environmental Compliance Officer will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of compliance programs that ensure WWF‑Kenya’s marine projects adhere to national and international environmental regulations. This role involves close collaboration with marine biologists, policy analysts, and external stakeholders to safeguard marine habitats, promote sustainable practices, and support Kenya’s Vision 2030 environmental goals. The successful candidate will act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies such as the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), ensuring that all project activities meet legal standards and best‑practice guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain comprehensive marine compliance frameworks aligned with Kenyan marine law, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and other relevant international treaties.
• Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments of marine conservation projects, including coral reef restoration, mangrove protection, and sustainable fisheries initiatives.
• Prepare and submit compliance reports, environmental impact assessments, and permit applications to NEMA, KMFRI, and other regulatory agencies.
• Provide technical guidance and training to project teams on best practices for waste management, pollution control, and habitat protection.
• Monitor changes in legislation and policy, advising senior management on necessary adjustments to project plans.
• Collaborate with local communities and fishing cooperatives to promote compliance with sustainable fishing regulations and to resolve conflicts.
• Maintain a robust database of compliance documentation, audit findings, and corrective action plans.
• Represent WWF‑Kenya at stakeholder meetings, workshops, and conferences related to marine conservation and environmental governance.

Required Skills

• In‑depth knowledge of Kenyan marine environmental legislation, international conventions, and compliance standards.
• Strong analytical and report‑writing abilities, with experience preparing technical and regulatory documents.

Education

Salary
