Job Overview

The Digital Heritage Archivist will lead efforts to catalog, digitize, and preserve Kenya’s cultural heritage using advanced digital tools. This role bridges traditional practices with modern technology, ensuring that historical narratives are accessible to future generations. The position is ideal for professionals passionate about cultural preservation and digital innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Digitize and archive cultural artifacts, oral histories, and indigenous knowledge using specialized software.
  • Develop metadata standards and taxonomy for digital heritage collections.
  • Collaborate with local communities to document and preserve endangered cultural practices.
  • Manage digital repositories and ensure data integrity and accessibility.
  • Conduct workshops to train stakeholders on digital archiving methodologies.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in digital archiving tools (e.g., Archivists’ Toolkit, CONTENTdm).
  • Experience with metadata standards (Dublin Core, METS/BagIt).
  • Strong understanding of cultural heritage preservation principles.
  • Excellent project management and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, Digital Archiving, or Cultural Heritage Management. Advanced degrees in Digital Humanities or related fields are advantageous.

Experience

3-5 years of experience in digital archiving, cultural heritage management, or museum curation. Prior work with indigenous or community-based projects is preferred.

Salary

220,000 – 320,000 SSP per annum, commensurate with experience.
