Job Overview
The Data Center Operations Manager will lead the day‑to‑day management of IBM Kenya’s new data center facility in Kakamega. This role is pivotal in ensuring optimal performance, high availability, and strict compliance with industry standards and security protocols. The manager will oversee a multidisciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and support staff, driving operational excellence while aligning with IBM’s global best practices. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the infrastructure backbone that supports critical services for businesses across Kenya and the East African region.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise all data center operations, including power, cooling, networking, and security systems.
- Develop and enforce operational policies, standard operating procedures, and compliance frameworks aligned with ISO 27001 and Uptime Institute Tier standards.
- Monitor real‑time performance metrics, conduct capacity planning, and implement proactive measures to prevent downtime.
- Coordinate with IBM Global Services to integrate emerging technologies such as AI‑driven monitoring and automation tools.
- Manage vendor relationships, negotiate service level agreements, and oversee third‑party maintenance contracts.
- Ensure rigorous incident response, root‑cause analysis, and continuous improvement of disaster recovery plans.
- Lead a team of 20+ technical staff, providing mentorship, performance reviews, and career development pathways.
- Prepare detailed operational reports for senior leadership and external auditors.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of data center infrastructure, including power distribution, HVAC, and networking.
- Proficiency with monitoring platforms (e.g., IBM Spectrum, Nagios, SolarWinds).
- Experience implementing security frameworks and compliance standards.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management abilities.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex data and drive actionable insights.
- Project management certification (PMP, ITIL) is a plus.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is required. Advanced certifications such as Cisco CCNP, VMware VCP, or IBM Certified Specialist are highly desirable.
Experience
Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience managing data center operations, with at least two years in a supervisory or managerial capacity. Experience in large‑scale enterprise environments and exposure to cloud‑based infrastructure services will be considered an advantage.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 150,000 to SSP 250,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
