Job Overview

This role involves designing and implementing sustainable tourism experiences in Kenya’s coastal regions. The ideal candidate will bridge cultural preservation, environmental conservation, and tourism innovation to create unique itineraries that align with global sustainability standards. The position is based in Malindi, a key hub for marine biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop eco-friendly tourism itineraries that integrate local cultural and natural heritage.
  • Collaborate with coastal communities to co-create tourism experiences that generate economic benefits while respecting traditions.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments for proposed tourism activities.
  • Train local guides and staff on sustainable tourism practices and customer engagement.
  • Monitor and report on the social and environmental outcomes of tourism programs.

Required Skills

  • Expertise in sustainable tourism frameworks (e.g., Global Sustainable Tourism Council criteria).
  • Strong project management and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Kenya’s coastal ecosystems and cultural practices.
  • Proficiency in stakeholder engagement and community development.
  • Ability to leverage digital tools for tourism marketing and virtual experiences.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Tourism Management, Environmental Studies, or a related field. A master’s degree in Sustainable Development or Cultural Heritage Management is a plus.

Experience

3-5 years of experience in sustainable tourism, community-based tourism, or environmental conservation. Prior work in Kenya’s coastal regions or with international NGOs is highly desirable.

Salary

240,000 – 320,000 SSP annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
