Job Overview

The Chief Data Privacy Officer (CDPO) will lead Safaricom’s data protection strategy, ensuring compliance with Kenya’s Data Protection Act, GDPR, and industry best practices. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, the CDPO will develop policies, oversee privacy impact assessments, and collaborate with cross‑functional teams to embed privacy by design into all products and services. This senior leadership position demands a strategic mindset, deep legal expertise, and the ability to translate complex regulations into actionable business processes. The CDPO will also serve as the primary liaison with regulators, auditors, and external stakeholders, reinforcing Safaricom’s reputation as a trusted custodian of personal data. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive data privacy framework aligned with Kenyan law and international standards.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments (PIAs) for new products, services, and technology initiatives.
  • Lead incident response for data breaches, coordinating investigations, notifications, and remediation.
  • Advise senior management on privacy risks, regulatory changes, and mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee training programs to embed privacy awareness across all employee levels.
  • Manage relationships with the Data Protection Commissioner, auditors, and third‑party vendors.
  • Monitor and report on privacy metrics, ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with IT, security, marketing, and product teams to embed privacy by design.

Required Skills

  • In‑depth knowledge of Kenya Data Protection Act, GDPR, and other relevant regulations.
  • Proven experience in leading privacy programs within large, complex organizations.
  • Strong analytical and risk assessment capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to translate legal requirements into technical and business solutions.
  • Leadership experience managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Certification such as CIPP/E, CIPM, or equivalent is preferred.

Education

A Master’s degree in Law, Information Security, Data Governance, or a related discipline is required. Additional certifications in privacy or information security are highly valued.

Experience

Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in data privacy, compliance, or information security, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role within the telecommunications or technology sector.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of SSP 2,500,000 to 3,500,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and long‑term incentive plans are also part of the compensation package.
