Job Overview

The Sustainability Compliance Officer will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of environmental compliance programs across Bamburi Cement’s Mombasa plant. Reporting to the Head of Sustainability, the incumbent will ensure adherence to Kenyan environmental regulations, international standards, and internal sustainability policies. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, update, and enforce environmental compliance policies in line with Kenya’s Environmental Management Act and international best practices.
  • Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments of plant operations to identify potential non‑compliance issues.
  • Prepare and submit accurate sustainability reports, emissions inventories, and regulatory filings to relevant authorities.
  • Lead cross‑functional sustainability projects, such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, and water conservation initiatives.
  • Provide training and awareness programs for staff on environmental standards, safe handling of hazardous materials, and sustainable practices.
  • Collaborate with the community relations team to address stakeholder concerns and promote transparent communication.
  • Monitor emerging regulations and industry trends, advising senior management on necessary adjustments.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of compliance documentation, audit findings, and corrective action plans.

Required Skills

  • In‑depth knowledge of Kenyan environmental legislation, ISO 14001, and sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., GRI, CDP).
  • Strong analytical abilities to interpret data, assess risks, and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for interfacing with regulators, senior leadership, and community members.
  • Proficiency in environmental management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Project management experience with a track record of delivering sustainability initiatives on time and within budget.
  • Ability to work independently and lead multidisciplinary teams.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) or ISO 14001 Lead Auditor are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in environmental compliance, sustainability reporting, or related roles within heavy‑industry or manufacturing environments. Prior experience in the cement or construction materials sector is an advantage.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive monthly salary ranging from KES 150,000 to 250,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and allowances are also part of the compensation package.
