Job Overview
This role focuses on developing bioengineered crop solutions to combat pests, diseases, and climate challenges in Kenyan agriculture. The position is based at Syngenta’s Mombasa Research Hub, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with molecular biology labs, greenhouse testing zones, and field trial sites along the coastal region.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct genetic modification experiments on staple crops like maize and beans
- Lead field trials to assess bioengineered crop performance under coastal climate conditions
- Collaborate with Kenyan universities on biotechnology research partnerships
- Prepare technical reports for regulatory submissions to the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS)
- Develop training modules for local farmers on bioengineered crop cultivation
Required Skills
- Expertise in CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing techniques
- Experience with molecular marker-assisted breeding
- Proficiency in statistical analysis of agricultural data
- Strong understanding of Kenyan agricultural policies
- Bilingual communication skills (English/Swahili)
Education
- Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Agricultural Science, or related field
- PhD preferred but not mandatory
Experience
- 3-5 years in agricultural biotechnology research
- Previous experience in East African field trials
Salary
250,000 – 350,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and research output.
