Job Overview

The Network Security Engineer will play a pivotal role in safeguarding Airtel Kenya’s core network infrastructure against evolving cyber threats. Reporting to the Head of Network Security, the incumbent will design, implement, and manage security controls, conduct vulnerability assessments, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, and maintain next‑generation firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and VPN solutions across the core network.
  • Conduct regular vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and risk analysis to identify and remediate security gaps.
  • Develop and enforce security policies, standards, and procedures in line with ISO 27001, NIST, and Kenya’s Data Protection Act.
  • Monitor security events using SIEM tools, investigate incidents, and lead incident response activities.
  • Collaborate with Network Planning and Engineering teams to integrate security controls into new network deployments and upgrades.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior engineers and operational staff on security best practices.
  • Prepare detailed security reports, dashboards, and executive briefings for senior management.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date documentation of network security architecture, configurations, and change management records.
  • Engage with third‑party vendors and service providers to evaluate security solutions and ensure contractual compliance.
  • Stay current with emerging threats, technologies, and regulatory changes affecting the telecommunications sector.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of network security protocols (IPSec, SSL/TLS, SSH) and technologies (firewalls, IDS/IPS, DDoS mitigation).
  • Hands‑on experience with security platforms such as Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Cisco ASA, or Check Point.
  • Proficiency in SIEM tools (Splunk, QRadar) and log analysis.
  • Understanding of routing and switching concepts (BGP, OSPF, MPLS) to integrate security controls effectively.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and incident response skills.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Relevant certifications (CISSP, CCNP Security, CEH, or equivalent) are highly desirable.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or specialized certifications will be considered an advantage.

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in network security engineering within a telecom or large‑scale ISP environment. Proven track record of designing and managing security solutions for high‑availability networks is essential.

Salary
